Serenity’s illustration work explores stylization as a way to navigate between narrative, character, and mood. Ranging from playful, character-driven scenes to more surreal, atmospheric compositions, the work prioritizes clarity of form while experimenting with color, lighting, and distortion.

Bright palettes and simplified shapes are used to create immediate visual appeal, often masking more ambiguous or uncanny undertones beneath the surface. Characters exist within constructed environments that feel familiar but slightly off—spaces where cuteness, tension, and abstraction can coexist.

Influenced by animation, digital media, and contemporary visual culture, these illustrations balance accessibility with experimentation. The work moves fluidly between commercial sensibilities and personal expression, treating illustration not just as storytelling, but as a space to test visual language.

Rei

Rei

Character Design

This character series explores a mythological ecosystem built on restraint, temptation, and balance. At its center is Rei, a winged cat demon who feeds on blood sparingly, surviving through discipline rather than excess. Her existence is disrupted by Hydel, a forest nymph whose blood—rich with sap, spore, and memory—becomes an intoxicating force that threatens to unravel that restraint.

The surrounding Mycena nymphs form a living system of control, each embodying a different mechanism of balance: suppression, illusion, memory, grounding, and regeneration. Rather than opposing Rei, they regulate her, maintaining equilibrium within a shared fungal network that binds them together.

Together, these characters represent an interdependent cycle where hunger, desire, and control coexist—suggesting that survival is not the absence of temptation, but the continuous negotiation with it.

About

Serenity Zhu

Serenity Zhu is a Chinese artist currently living and working in New York City. She is pursuing a BFA in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts, with a practice that extends beyond traditional illustration into fine art, sculpture, and object-based design. Her work often explores the intersection of aesthetics, identity, and control, informed by both Eastern and Western cultural frameworks.

From an early age, Serenity developed an interest in visual culture through a mix of animation, contemporary art, and luxury fashion imagery. This blend continues to shape her approach, combining polished visual language with conceptual undertones. Her practice is influenced by artists and designers who navigate between commercial and fine art spaces, and she aims to build a body of work that moves fluidly across those boundaries.

Serenity aspires to work as an artist and illustrator within the fashion, design, gaming, and music industries, while continuing to develop her independent practice in fine art. Her long-term goal is to establish an international presence, connecting creative industries in both the United States and China.
